Birth of a Nation

This is a trailer to the famous movie that created Hollywood - the first full-length movie in American history. I watched it on DVD last night. What struck me was how great it was as art but how very bad it was as history. There is just no getting around it: this is a truly racist movie. In these times when the practice of branding innocent statements as "racist" have hardened us to the term, this movie reminds us that there really was a racist past in our nation. The key thing to remember is how well this movie was received in the 1915.
