The rule is:

For the word "it" the possessive pronoun is not punctuated but the contraction is.
  • Answer 1 is wrong because the first "its" is a contraction and is not punctuated while the second "its" is a possessive pronoun and is punctuated.
  • Answer 2 is wrong because the second "its" is punctuated.
  • Answer 4 is wrong because the first "its" is not punctuated.



  1. Its my duty to admit to the army that it's gun was taken by me.
  2. It's my duty to admit to the army that it's gun was taken by me.
  3. It's my duty to admit to the army that its gun was taken by me.
  4. Its my duty to admit to the army that its gun was taken by me.
